Put into the light. The painter Jean-Jacques Lüscher (1884-1955)
Saturday, September 4, 2021 – Sunday, October 31, 2021
Curated by Dina Epelbaum
The major autumn exhibition curated by guest curator Dina Epelbaum pays tribute to the work of Riehen painter Jean-Jacques Lüscher (1884-1955). Having grown up in a milieu characterized by art and music, Lüscher returned to Switzerland before the First World War after years of training in Paris and lived with his family for several years in the Wettsteinhaus in the middle of Riehen. Lüscher was well connected in the Basel art scene. With his atmospheric intérieurs and lively figure scenes, he is one of the main representatives of the dark-toned painters group of artists.
The exhibition brings together works from the widely scattered private estate and public collections for the first time, supplemented with documents, photos and objects that provide an insight into the life and work of the important Riehen artist. It not only sheds light on the painter's work, but also on a chapter of Basel's art history in the first half of the 20th century.
